Application of Traffic Laws

Motorized scooters have the same rights and responsibilities to follow traffic laws as a bicycle, except for those provisions expressly related to the operation of the motorized scooter. Sidewalk Use: It is unlawful to operate a motorized foot scooter on the sidewalk, except to enter or leave adjacent property. Passenger Prohibition: The carrying of a passenger on a motorized scooter is prohibited. Minimum Age: You must be at least 12-years-old or older to operate a motorized foot scooter. Protective Headgear: Protective headgear is mandatory for those aged 17-years-old and under. Required Lighting: A headlight and taillight are required when the motorized scooter will be operated when normal vehicle lighting is required. Operation Requirements and Prohibitions: ▪ ride as close to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway as possible, ▪ left hand turns require the operator to stop and dismount the scooter at the right side of the road and cross the road on foot, ▪ motorized scooters may operate on bicycle paths, bicycle lanes, and bicycle trails, ▪ local jurisdictions may pass ordinances that prohibit motorized scooters on bicycle paths, ▪ motorized scooters may not operate on pedestrian only paths.
